Breaking news: Rangers terms for new striker transfer emerge …

Chris Jack believes Rangers will only sign a new striker before the transfer deadline if Cyriel Dessers exits Ibrox in the next fortnight.

Reports earlier in the summer transfer window suggested the Nigerian international had attracted attention from several clubs, with the Gers believed to be willing to sell if their valuation was met [Rangers Review, 3 July].

Most pundits and supporters are in agreement that the Light Blues could do with some firepower alongside Dessers, but Rangers Review journalist Jack believes that will only happen on one condition

Speaking on the Rangers Review YouTube channel (19 August) he said: “I would be surprised if a number nine comes in now.

“I mentioned on the show a couple of weeks ago that I didn’t see Rangers carrying four centre-forwards within the squad. I don’t see Rangers going to sign another one unless anything happens with Dessers, unless he leaves.

“We know earlier on in the window there was interest, a number of clubs had enquired, but that is different from money being out on the table and Dessers having a decision to make.

“Unless he moves on in the next fortnight, I don’t see Rangers going and signing another one.”

Will Cyriel Dessers exit Rangers amid Ibrox transfer rumours?

While most Rangers fans would be eager to see the Gers upgrade on Dessers in the long run, it doesn’t feel like the Light Blues are in a position to let the Nigerian exit so close to the end of the transfer window.

He may not be perfect, he is far from it, but he is the most consistent source of goals in Clement’s squad currently and it would be a massive risk if he was sold with just Hamza Igamane and Danilo waiting in the wings.
A new striker may well be able to come in and hit the ground running to replace the Nigerian’s goals, but they could also struggle to adapt to the league and leave the Gers scrambling for a solution in the January window.

Ultimately, it feels like Rangers fans are going to have to settle for another season of Dessers leading their line week in and week out.

However, a big-money offer could obviously change that should it arrive in the coming weeks.
