Ten Killed in Clash Between Shiite Group and Abuja Police
A violent confrontation between members of the El Zakzaky movement, commonly known as Shiites, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command in Abuja’s Julius Berger area on Sunday resulted in ten fatalities. Reports indicate that police officers were among the deceased, with several others injured by gunfire.
The unrest began when the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also referred to as the Shiite group, reportedly attacked a police checkpoint at Wuse junction. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command stated that the attackers were equipped with machetes, knives, and improvised explosive devices, including makeshift bombs contained in bottles of kerosene.
The clash resulted in the destruction of police patrol vehicles, with three vehicles set ablaze. In retaliation, police officers engaged in a fierce battle to regain control of the area.
The violence led to significant disruptions in traffic, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes to avoid the affected areas and potential vehicle damage.
Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT Command, confirmed the incident, reporting that two police officers were killed, three others were injured and hospitalized, and three patrol vehicles were destroyed.
Adeh noted that the group attacked the police checkpoint without provocation. Several arrests have been made, and Benneth Igweh, the Commissioner of Police, has condemned the assault and pledged to bring those responsible to justice.
“The situation is now under control, and efforts are being made to restore normalcy,” Adeh stated.
The FCT Police Command remains vigilant, monitoring the situation closely and promising to update the public on any further developments.
