breaking news: Rabbi Matondo to leave as Rangers to shift mega-money …

Rabbi Matondo’s huge wages at Rangers make an exit to Blackburn the right move before the transfer window shuts, according to Derek Ferguson.

The former Gers midfielder indicated on Open Goal (22 August) that the fast wide man is being paid £34,000-a-week at Ibrox, to the astonishment of host Si Ferry.

Despite his sparkling display in the 6-0 win over Ross County on 24 August he has been strongly linked with a move to Ewood Park [Daily Mail, 22 August].

And for the money he is on Ferguson believes it would make sense to sanction an exit so Philippe Clement can make some of his own signings before the transfer deadline.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: “The other thing is in terms of the wages because you hear the rumours up here in terms of what he’s on.

“And for the Scottish Premiership it seems a hell of a lot of money that he’s on.

“I think the manager would like to have him out of the squad because he needs fresh faces in.

“Rabbi’s been there a good while now and the manager’s had a good year to have a look at him. Maybe he’s not his type.

Blackburn Rovers boss wants Rangers winger at Ewood Park

Blackburn boss John Eustance has confirmed his club’s interest in the 23-year-old [Lancashire Telegraph, 22 August] even before his two-goal showing at the weekend.

Following the game Clement predicted Matondo would stay unless a club were to “come with enough money” [Sky Sports, 24 August], raising the stakes on a late exit.

If the Welsh international were to replicate his latest performance regularly he would likely justify is mooted wage.

But after two years of inconsistent form and fitness and only flashes of brilliance it may be a contract the Gers can’t justify carrying, especially amid suggestions he could be used as a makeweight to bring in Blackburn captain Lewis Travis [Scottish Sun, 23 August].

In other Rangers news, there has been amazement at the “absolutely incredible” fall from grace of a Gers star who could now leave.
