Man Sentenced to Seven Years for Joining Secret Cult

Abeokuta’s Special Cultism Court in Ogun has sentenced 30-year-old Tope Mutairu to seven years in prison for participating in a secret cult. Magistrate O.L. Oke determined that the prosecution had established Mutairu’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
Magistrate Oke emphasized that the evidence provided was compelling, ruling that Mutairu must serve the full term without the possibility of a fine. Mutairu faced charges of conspiracy and membership in an illegal society.
Prosecutor Inspector Olaide Rawlings informed the court that Mutairu committed the offenses on September 3, 2023, at Olodo Junction in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area. Rawlings reported that the police had received a tip-off about a meeting of the Eiye Confraternity led by Mutairu at this location. While the police apprehended Mutairu, other cult members managed to flee.
The charges against Mutairu were in violation of Sections 45(b) and 36 of Ogun State’s Secret Cults Prohibition and Special Provisions Law of 2016.
