OPC’s Controversial Demand: Will Tinubu Reinstate the Pipeline Security Contract?”

The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has urged President Bola Tinubu to reinstate the pipeline security contract previously revoked by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Wasiu Afolabi, President of OPC, made the appeal during the organization’s 30th-anniversary event in Lagos on Thursday. He emphasized that restoring the contract would enhance Nigeria’s energy security, address unemployment in the South-West, Kogi, Kwara, and Edo states, and curb pipeline vandalism.

Afolabi highlighted OPC’s proven track record in pipeline protection and called on Tinubu to allow the organization to continue its role in securing the nation’s energy infrastructure. “OPC has successfully handled pipeline security before and can do so again if given the chance,” he said.

He also lamented the lack of recognition and benefits received by OPC despite its significant contributions to democracy. Afolabi criticized both past and present political leaders for neglecting OPC’s sacrifices and called for a rectification of this injustice. “In the past 25 years, despite having two Presidents and 32 governors from Yoruba land, OPC has received no acknowledgment or benefits for its crucial role in democracy,” he stated.

Afolabi further criticized Nigerian politicians for their self-serving behavior and the nation’s ongoing issues with poverty, insecurity, and inadequate basic services. He urged the government to address the demands of the Nigerian Labour Congress and activists calling for improvements in electricity, education, and basic necessities.
