How 129 is Dead in Prison Break Attempt

On Monday night, a failed jailbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo resulted in the deaths of at least 129 individuals. Congolese Interior Minister Jacquemain Shabani confirmed the tragic event via his X account on Tuesday.Â
According to Shabani, prison authorities shot 24 inmates, while many others were killed by suffocation or trampling. The chaos at Makala Prison in Kinshasa also saw some female prisoners being raped. Additionally, at least 59 people were reported injured.
The situation was eventually brought under control by police and military forces. Shabani noted that the reported casualties are preliminary, and significant property damage occurred, with administrative buildings, the infirmary, and the food depot being completely destroyed. An emergency meeting was held by security forces on Tuesday to address the situation.
