See the Amount NANS Demands as Increase for Student Allowance, Amid Fuel Price Increase

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for a raise in the student upkeep allowance from ₦20,000 to ₦40,000 in response to the recent fuel price increase.
Babatunde Akinteye, the NANS Senate President, made this request during a press conference in Abuja on Monday, emphasizing that the increase is crucial for students to manage the higher cost of living and continue their education without financial hardship.
Akinteye also urged the Federal Government to cut down on excessive spending, asserting that leaders should set an example during these challenging times when sacrifices are being demanded from citizens.
He acknowledged the current economic difficulties, including the impacts of reforms by President Bola Tinubu, and called for patience and unity among Nigerians.
“We are at a critical point in our nation’s history, facing economic reforms that have brought discomfort and uncertainty,” Akinteye said. “While these times are tough, we must stay united and think clearly. Burning down our country is not a solution.”
Akinteye emphasized the need for careful, strategic responses rather than immediate protests. He recognized that students and the lower class are particularly affected by the surge in fuel prices, leading to heightened distress and frustration.
He stressed the importance of addressing these issues with caution and preserving peace, stating, “We must resist the urge to react impulsively. The safety and well-being of every Nigerian student remain a top priority for NANS. We will not endanger them by calling for hasty protests.”
