Omoyele Sowore has been released from Department of State Services (DSS) custody following his arrest by Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport. Sowore, who arrived from the United States, was initially detained by NIS on behalf of the DSS while awaiting further instructions.

Sowore, leader of the #RevolutionNow movement, reported that upon his return to Nigeria, immigration officers confiscated his passport and informed him of the detention order. His website, Sahara Reporters, had previously reported his detention, a story that was also picked up by other media, including TheCable.

The Take-It-Back Movement, which Sowore also leads, is organizing a new protest scheduled for October 1.

On social media, Sowore condemned the action, linking it to what he views as the oppressive tactics of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. He urged citizens to participate in planned protests and direct actions against what he describes as a regime of tyranny.

Sowore’s release has been met with jubilation among his supporters, who view the detention and subsequent release as part of ongoing political tensions.
