Cabinet Changes Ahead: Gbajabiamila Tells Tinubu to Take a Break in the UK
Reports suggest that numerous ministers and their influential backers are ramping up efforts to secure their positions in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet. Sources close to the situation have informed The Punch that some ministers are urgently seeking to win the President’s favor.
“One common tactic is for ministers to reach out to their godfathers to sway the President. This is a usual occurrence, but ultimately, the President will act according to his vision for the country,” said one presidential aide.
Amid fears of being removed from their posts, several ministers have increased their lobbying efforts, enlisting the help of the President’s associates, including Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, to ensure a favorable outcome.
Another official revealed that Gbajabiamila has expressed concern about the mounting pressure on Tinubu from ministers eager for clarity regarding their futures in the cabinet. The Chief of Staff reportedly advised the President to take a brief respite in the UK to deflect some of the lobbying intensity, explaining why there was uncertainty about Tinubu’s whereabouts for several days.
“Since news broke about a possible cabinet reshuffle, the President has faced significant pressure from political patrons and anxious ministers. To ease this tension, Gbajabiamila suggested that the President spend some time in the UK after attending the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit,” the source noted.
Following a period of speculation regarding Tinubu’s health after photos of him with King Charles surfaced, it became clear that the President’s trip was more about managing political pressures than medical issues.
While it’s typical for politicians to advocate for their allies, many Nigerians are dissatisfied with the ministers’ performance, leaving the President with little choice but to make changes. “If you’re not delivering results, you risk being replaced, regardless of your connections,” the source emphasized.
