Nigerian Government: “Our Sacrifices Will Not Be In Vain” Amid Economic Hardship
The Federal Government has expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their resilience during the country’s economic difficulties, promising that their sacrifices will yield positive outcomes.
At a press conference on Thursday, Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, spoke on behalf of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary. He acknowledged the citizens’ patience and perseverance during these challenging times, stating, “The journey has been tough, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Our sacrifices will not be in vain.”
Joining him were key government figures, including Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and Finance Minister Wale Edun. Idris emphasized that this is a moment for reflection and renewed hope, recognizing Nigeria’s enduring spirit in the face of adversity.
He noted that since independence in 1960, Nigeria has evolved into a significant force in Africa and a respected player globally, overcoming various challenges, including political and economic upheavals. “Our democracy, now strong for 25 years, reflects the will of the Nigerian people to secure freedom for future generations,” he added.
Under President Tinubu’s leadership, Idris highlighted the implementation of transformative policies aimed at correcting past mistakes and establishing Nigeria as an economic powerhouse. Despite facing global economic challenges and transitional difficulties, the President remains dedicated to revitalizing the economy and fostering sustainable growth.
Idris outlined key initiatives of the current administration, including local government autonomy, enhancing macroeconomic stability, reforming the tax system, and attracting investment in the oil and gas sector. He also discussed the removal of the petroleum subsidy, which is facilitating a shift toward Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cleaner energy source, aiming to reduce transportation costs significantly.
Additionally, he pointed out the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) under the Student Loans Act 2024, which aims to provide more accessible education financing for young Nigerians. The new Consumer Credit Corporation will also offer flexible, low-cost consumer credit options.
Idris reiterated his appreciation for Nigerians’ patience and resilience, asserting that while the journey is challenging, there are signs of progress, such as improved military success against criminal activities and decreasing inflation rates.
He concluded by emphasizing the collective responsibility of all Nigerians to work towards peace, unity, and stability, affirming a shared commitment to building a nation that every citizen can take pride in.
