Tinubu: I Will Respect Judicial Independence

President Bola Tinubu has pledged to uphold the independence and integrity of the judiciary.
During the swearing-in ceremony for Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Tinubu emphasized that his administration will respect the boundaries between the executive and judicial branches.
Taking place on Monday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, he stated, “The judiciary is a crucial pillar of our constitutional democracy. Historically, the Nigerian judiciary has acted as a moderating force, ensuring that all parties remain accountable.”
He highlighted the judiciary’s role as the last refuge for citizens, reinforcing public trust in democracy by providing a means of redress for grievances.
“It is essential for our judiciary to maintain its independence, and my administration is committed to safeguarding its integrity,” he continued. “While we may collaborate as parts of the same government, we will respect the clear distinctions between our roles and will not interfere in one another’s functions. This is vital for sustaining our democracy.”
Tinubu urged Justice Kekere-Ekun to uphold ethical leadership, courage, and integrity—qualities he believes define her career. He expressed confidence that she would lead the judiciary in a progressive direction.
“This day also marks a significant moment for the judiciary as a dynamic institution. I especially congratulate Nigerian women; this is proof that any girl can aspire to great things and see her dreams realized,” he added.
Justice Kekere-Ekun is now recognized as the second female Chief Justice in Nigeria’s history.
