Ohanaeze Calls for Political Pardon for Nnamdi Kanu as Nigeria Celebrates 64 Years of Independence

As Nigeria commemorates its 64th Independence Day, the Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take advantage of the celebratory spirit by granting a political pardon to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In an interview with reporters in Awka, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene, the National Vice President of Ohanaeze, emphasized that Kanu’s release could foster peace, help identify those instigating violence, and ultimately put an end to the troubling sit-at-home orders in the Southeast.
“Our primary request for this year’s Independence Day is for the President to offer a political pardon to one of our own, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently held by the DSS,” Okeke-Ogene stated.
Ohanaeze firmly believes that releasing Kanu would enhance peace and unity for all Nigerians in Igbo land. They also called on Southeast governors to prioritize security and the well-being of their constituents.
Okeke-Ogene urged President Tinubu to act swiftly to bring hope to millions facing insecurity, hunger, and socio-economic challenges, noting that the nation is progressing too slowly.
