House of Representatives Forms Committee to Address Delayed Justice

The House of Representatives has taken steps to confront the issue of delayed justice in Nigeria. They have assigned the Committee on Constitutional Review, led by Benjamin Kalu, to conduct a thorough examination of the nation’s justice and judicial systems.

The committee is tasked with engaging experts, civil society, and citizens to gather insights for meaningful reforms, with a deadline set for December 2025. This decision came after the passage of a motion titled “The Need to Review Nigeria’s Justice and Judicial System to Restore Public Trust in the Judiciary and Address Delays in Justice,” which was introduced by Ganiyu Ayuba, the representative for Alimosho Federal Constituency in Lagos State.

Ayuba emphasized the judiciary’s duty to ensure timely justice and effectively interpret the laws enacted by the legislature. He stated, “Section 36(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) mandates the prompt resolution of civil rights and obligations by established courts or tribunals.”

He expressed concern that delays within the judicial system are undermining public confidence, noting that trials in some states can extend far beyond reasonable timelines. “Delay in justice is often tantamount to denial of justice,” he added.

The House recognized that without immediate measures to reduce the backlog within the judicial system, public trust could be further eroded, leading individuals to resort to self-help.

The committee is expected to present its findings within four weeks for further legislative consideration.
