The Nigerian Police have issued a statement regarding an incident involving a Federal Lawmaker, Mr. Alex Ikwechegh, who was seen slapping a Bolt driver in a viral video.

The incident, which occurred on October 27, 2024, in Maitama, Abuja, involved Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, the driver. According to the police, the FCT Command is currently investigating the matter following a formal complaint lodged by Mr. Abuwatseya at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters.

The police also emphasized the importance of integrity, warning the public against using the name or authority of the Inspector-General of Police to intimidate others, as such behavior contradicts the principles of fairness upheld by the IGP’s office.

In the video, Ikwechegh is seen striking the driver several times, leading to a confrontation where the driver questioned the lawmaker, “Did you just slap me three times?” To which Ikwechegh retorted, “Twice, and you might soon receive a third slap.” The lawmaker further threatened the driver, claiming he could make him “disappear” without consequence, stating, “Do you know who I am? I am a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and can lock you up in my Generator House, and nothing will happen.”

The incident has sparked varied reactions across social media. As of this report, attempts to contact Ikwechegh have been unsuccessful.
