Governor Okpebholo Freezes Edo State Bank Accounts, Orders Police Action on Cult Violence

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, issued a directive on Thursday to immediately freeze all state government bank accounts until further notice. This decision applies to all commercial banks, ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), with strict compliance required

Governor Okpebholo further emphasized that anyone, including MDA heads and civil servants, found violating this directive will face severe penalties. He outlined that all withdrawals from the state accounts must cease until further instructions are given. The Governor assured that once investigations and reconciliations are complete, further decisions will be made.

Additionally, Okpebholo called on the state’s Commissioner of Police to take decisive action to end the ongoing cult-related violence, urging that all illegal activities be halted within 48 hours. He condemned the rampant bloodshed and criminal activities, particularly in Benin City, stating that cult groups involved in violence would not be allowed to operate.

“These criminal associations will remain banned, and it is imperative that the Commissioner of Police enforces this ban swiftly and thoroughly,” the governor said. He reiterated his commitment to restoring safety and order in the state, which was a central theme of his campaign.

Governor Okpebholo also addressed administrative changes, instructing that the Ministry of Roads and Bridges be reverted to the Ministry of Works, citing the lack of infrastructure development under the previous administration. He remarked that it was absurd to maintain a ministry name associated with roads and bridges, especially when no new infrastructure was delivered during the past tenure.

In a related development, Okpebholo reflected on his electoral victory during a thanksgiving service at Sam Ogbemudia Stadium. He shared his belief that his success was divinely ordained, recounting how he had found a dead bat on his bed shortly after his election win. The governor attributed his victory to his faith in God and the prayers of those who supported him.

He emphasized that he had not sought the assistance of any traditional healer or prophet during the election, and instead placed his trust entirely in divine intervention. Okpebholo expressed his gratitude to the clergy and citizens who supported his cause, urging others to rely on God in their own challenges.

The thanksgiving event was attended by various political figures and religious leaders, further underscoring the significance of the governor’s message of faith and determination.
