A sense of panic gripped workers at the “Light of the Nation” tower construction site in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Saturday, after they uncovered a fresh female corpse.

The tower, situated near the Ekwulobia bridge, is part of a project intended to promote the state’s identity with the phrase “Light of the Nation” and enhance the surrounding area’s aesthetics.

Although the exact cause and timing of the burial remain unclear, reports indicate the body was discovered during the construction activities. The incident has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.

The construction of the tower, along with the ongoing Ekwulobia bridge and road dualization projects, is part of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s vision for a smart, modern city in Anambra.

A local source, who identified himself as Uche, described how the discovery of the seemingly recent burial caused panic, with locals rushing to the scene in an attempt to identify the body. Some residents recognized the woman and speculated that her husband had passed away about five years ago.

Within moments, a large crowd had gathered, with many expressing disbelief and curiosity. Community leaders were reportedly notified, and it is believed that the incident has been reported to the police. Attempts to gather information from the construction workers were unsuccessful, as they declined to comment.

When visited by our correspondent on Sunday, a sizable crowd remained at the scene. The state’s Commissioner for Environment, Felix Odumegwu, referred the matter to Dr. Chibueze Ofobuike, the Chairman of Aguata Local Government Area, who confirmed that officials were being sent to the site to investigate and possibly remove the body.

At the time of reporting, police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga had not responded to inquiries regarding the incident.
