Damagum Eyes PDP Chairmanship Victory, Get the Support of State Chairmen Ahead of Key NEC Meeting

Ambassador Umar Ilyas Damagum, the Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has secured the endorsement of state chairmen across all 36 states ahead of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on November 28.
Sources indicate that during a recent gathering at the party’s national headquarters, Wadata Plaza in Abuja, Damagum and the state chairmen refuted claims of internal strife or challenges to his leadership.
The meeting, which brought together both newly elected and current state chairmen from all states and the Federal Capital Territory, was described as a routine session to strengthen relationships. Damagum took the opportunity to engage with the state chairmen in a constructive dialogue, which he later referred to as a familiarization visit.
In interviews following the meeting, the state chairmen expressed their unwavering support for Damagum, countering reports that some party members had called for his replacement due to recent electoral setbacks in Edo and Ondo states. Chief Austin Nwachukwu, the PDP Chairman from Imo State and Interim Chairman of the State Chairmen’s Forum, emphasized that there was no internal discord. He also noted that there was no need for a formal vote of confidence, as the leadership was solid and united.
“We want to correct the misconception that the party’s fortunes are declining,” Nwachukwu remarked. “On the contrary, the party is becoming stronger as we move forward. What some may perceive as a crisis is largely exaggerated.” He attributed the party’s recent electoral losses to the strategies employed by the ruling party, rather than any shortcomings in Damagum’s leadership.
Damagum, maintaining a confident and calm demeanor, explained that the meeting with the state chairmen was part of a regular interaction, not a response to any alleged conflict circulating on social media. He clarified that the purpose of the gathering was to foster communication and discuss upcoming party events, including the Zonal Congresses.
“My state chairmen are key allies in the field, and this meeting is not unusual. We’ve had similar gatherings in the past,” Damagum said. “This was an opportunity to connect with them and address important matters related to the party’s activities.”
