IGP Orders Enhanced Security Measures to Tackle Traffic and Highway Robbery Amid Yuletide Festivities
As the festive season approaches, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, NPM, has reassured Nigerians of increased security measures to ensure public safety throughout the yuletide period. The IGP’s directive aims to prevent traffic and highway robberies, as well as other criminal activities that tend to surge during the busy holiday season, according to a report from the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP).
In response, the IGP has ordered the deployment of additional police personnel across key locations, including major highways, urban areas, and recreational spots nationwide. The enhanced police presence is aimed at deterring criminal activity, especially on highways notorious for robbery, as the country experiences heightened travel and public events during this period.
This initiative is already yielding results, as police forces continue their proactive efforts to safeguard the public. On December 10, 2024, officers from the Lagos State Police Command apprehended four individuals—Akeem Alabi, Adewale Sogbesan, Emmanuel Izeagbe, and Francis Okoko—who are believed to be part of a criminal gang operating in the Costain area of Lagos. During interrogation, the suspects admitted to their involvement in armed robbery.
Similarly, on December 6, 2024, the Anambra State Police Command tracked and arrested Miracle Mwakaloi, a suspected armed robber, in Awka. After his capture, he led officers to his residence, where a search uncovered three AK-47 rifles.
The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to providing a secure environment during the holidays and beyond. With intensified patrols, increased community engagement, and strategic measures to combat crime, the force aims to ensure that the festive period is free from criminal threats. The IGP has urged citizens to cooperate with the police and report any suspicious activities promptly.
