How EFCC Officer was Killed in Awka Raid, Laid to Rest in Sokoto

An EFCC officer, Halisu Sahabi, was tragically killed on Friday during a raid in Awka, Anambra State, allegedly by a suspected internet fraudster. Sahabi, who held the rank of Assistant Superintendent, has since been laid to rest in Sokoto State, according to family members.

Reports indicate that Sahabi had planned to marry after the upcoming fasting season, but his life was cut short while on duty. The suspect, identified as Dr. Chukwuka Josiah Ikechukwu Nnamdi from Ifite, Awka, was apprehended by police on Saturday after fleeing the scene. He was found hiding in the ceiling of a neighbor’s house.
The operation, aimed at arresting internet fraudsters, took a tragic turn when the suspect opened fire on EFCC operatives. Sahabi was killed, and another officer was injured. The gunman reportedly threw his weapon into the bushes before retreating. Dr. Nnamdi later claimed that he shot in self-defense, although police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
Sources mentioned that the EFCC operatives, who had arrived in Awka to apprehend suspected cybercriminals, lacked bulletproof vests, wearing only EFCC-branded jackets. Despite successfully arresting several suspects and recovering evidence, the operation encountered resistance from local police, further complicating the situation.
After the shooting, the injured officer was rushed to the General Hospital in Awka, but due to a lack of doctors, they were redirected to a private hospital, where Sahabi was confirmed dead. The suspect is now in custody and facing possible charges related to the officer’s death.
