FEC Approves N4.2 Trillion for Key Road Infrastructure Initiatives

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a substantial N4.2 trillion for various major road infrastructure projects aimed at improving transportation networks and promoting regional trade. Among the approved projects are key routes in Anambra, Imo, and Kaduna States, which are expected to foster economic growth and connectivity across regions.

In a bid to enhance road safety and reduce travel times between Kaduna and Plateau States, the Musasa-Jos route in Kaduna State has been allocated N18 billion. This will address critical road safety issues in the region.

A joint road project between Abia and Enugu States will receive N12.75 billion. This initiative focuses on addressing long-standing infrastructure deficiencies in key areas of both states.

Minister of Works and Housing, David Umahi, highlighted that many of the new road projects, including the Lokoja-Benin and Abuja-Kano routes, will be constructed using reinforced concrete pavements, rather than traditional asphalt. Umahi explained that concrete roads are more durable and cost-efficient in the long term, with lower costs compared to previous asphalt-based projects that some contractors had rejected.

The Minister also provided clarification on terminated contracts, particularly those with Julius Berger, and confirmed that the government has negotiated cost-saving strategies. Equipment from previous contractors will be reused, eliminating unnecessary mobilization expenses.

Addressing concerns over the legitimacy of companies awarded contracts, Umahi reassured the public that thorough due diligence was conducted to ensure that only credible and capable contractors were selected for the projects. “We have resolved all misunderstandings with stakeholders, including media outlets, to guarantee transparency,” he said. “These companies are legitimate and well-equipped to execute the projects.”

Umahi emphasized that the overarching goal of these road initiatives is not only to enhance the nation’s infrastructure but to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic transformation, with a focus on delivering long-lasting and cost-effective solutions.

In addition to the major national projects, FEC approved road construction projects totaling N159.5 billion for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The projects are designed to enhance urban development and improve transportation access within Abuja and its surrounding areas.

Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure, the Minister of State for the FCT, outlined the five approved projects during a post-FEC briefing. These include the N30.97 billion Bus Terminal Access Road in Mabushi, which will be constructed by SETRACO Nigeria Limited, and the N62.5 billion Arterial Road from Wuye District to Ring Road II, awarded to Arab Contractors Nigeria Limited.

Other approved projects include the Kuje-Gwagwalada Dual Carriageway (N7.49 billion), the rehabilitation of Old Keffi Road (N26.87 billion), and the construction of an access road to Renewed Hope Cities and Estates in the Kasana West District (N31.66 billion), all of which are expected to be completed within 18 to 20 months.

Bunkure assured residents of the FCT that these projects align with the city’s growth and urban expansion goals, focusing on improved road networks and greater connectivity. She emphasized that all contracts have been awarded to reputable construction firms with proven track records and assured the public that the projects would be completed on schedule to foster mobility and economic development.
