Family in Shock as Father’s Body Mysteriously Disappears from Navy Hospital Mortuary

Tension has escalated in a Delta State family following the mysterious disappearance of their 78-year-old father’s body from the mortuary at the Nigerian Navy Hospital in Effurun, located in Uvwie Local Government Area.
Ighorhiohwunu Aghogho, a human rights activist and one of the deceased’s children, has formally petitioned the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ekpan, CSP Aliyu Shaba, requesting an investigation into the incident on behalf of the family.
According to reports, the deceased’s children, Omokiniovo Ighorhiohwunu and Duke Ighorhiohwunu, deposited their father’s body at the hospital’s mortuary on November 21, 2024.
In the petition, Aghogho emphasized that his siblings had properly signed for the body when it was deposited. He expressed their shock and distress over the sudden disappearance and urged the police to investigate the matter as soon as possible.
Aghogho requested that the police take immediate action to determine the cause of the disappearance, identify those responsible, and ensure that the culprits are held accountable. He also called for the body’s safe return to the family for a proper burial.
Additionally, Aghogho appealed to the police to pursue justice in the case, which has caused significant emotional distress for the family.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army’s 3 Battalion in Effurun has reportedly gotten involved, with a petition filed by an unnamed human rights activist against Aghogho. The complaint claims the body went missing from the mortuary under suspicious circumstances.
A female military police officer, identified as Ruth John, confirmed in a phone conversation on Monday that the Army has invited Aghogho to discuss the matter further.
At the same time, the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ovwian, Udu Local Government Area, has reportedly launched its own investigation into possible military involvement in the case, asserting that the issue falls within the police’s jurisdiction.
