See the Number of Vigilantes and Firewood fetchers Boko Haram Killed in Borno Attack

At least 12 people, including two vigilante members and 10 civilians collecting firewood, lost their lives in a deadly ambush by suspected Boko Haram fighters in Bokko Ghide, a community in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.

The Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Mohammed Timta, confirmed the attack, stating that the vigilantes—members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF)—were ambushed along the Kirawa road in Pulka District while on patrol.

The other victims, he said, had gone into the nearby bush on Saturday to gather firewood when the insurgents struck.

“They were simply trying to survive when the terrorists attacked. Ten of them were killed on the spot, while two others sustained life-threatening injuries,” the Emir said.

He added that the bodies of the deceased were laid to rest shortly after the attack, and the wounded were transported to Maiduguri for emergency treatment.

“Sadly, two of my CJTF members were also killed the day before, on Friday. They gave their lives to protect others. May their souls rest in peace, and may their families find strength in this difficult time,” he added.

The monarch expressed appreciation for the state government and military’s continued efforts but called for the adoption of advanced technology, including drones and modern surveillance tools, to enhance the fight against insurgency.

With the rainy season fast approaching, he warned that fear has taken hold of the community, especially among farmers who are now reluctant to visit their lands for seasonal preparations.

Meanwhile, the attack has left residents deeply shaken. One local, Ali Audu, shared his sorrow, saying, “This hit us hard. I personally knew three of the people who were killed. It’s been a day of mourning for everyone here.”

He called on security forces to step up their presence and prevent further violence against vulnerable residents.
