Tension in Osun: Amotekun Corps Accused of Targeting APC Leaders in Atakumosa

Amotekun

Reports emerging from Itapa, a community in Atakumosa East Local Government Area of Osun State, suggest that the Osun Amotekun Corps has launched a wave of arrests targeting traditional leaders allegedly affiliated with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

As of this report, five prominent traditional figures from Itapa have reportedly been detained in Osogbo, the state capital. Sources indicate that the arrests are linked to claims that these individuals were involved in setting up a community-based security network—an initiative that had the backing of the local police.

Those arrested include Chief Adeyeri Olalekan, Chief Adeyeri Ladele, Chief Adeyeri Adeyeye, Chief Ariyo Dare, and Chief Ogunsola Oladele. The chiefs were initially apprehended on Tuesday, released on administrative bail, but were subsequently rearrested on Sunday by the Amotekun Field Commander, Mr. Adekunle Omoyele.

Community insiders revealed that, in response to a surge in cult-related violence, the Itapa leadership had collaborated with the local Divisional Police Officer (DPO) to set up a vigilante group aimed at safeguarding lives and property. Their efforts reportedly led to the recent arrest and detention of a suspected cultist, now remanded in custody.

However, concerns are growing that the arrests may be politically motivated. According to residents, some of the cult suspects have alleged ties to the ruling People’s Democratic Party
