Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, who ran as the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in 2023, is making headlines again—this time for his blunt take on what the 2027 presidential race should look like.

 

In a video that’s making the rounds, Datti didn’t mince words: come 2027, the presidency should go to the South. According to him, that’s the fair and expected direction, in line with Nigeria’s zoning tradition.

 

“In 2027, the default mindset is that the presidency belongs to the South,” he said, echoing what many believe is long overdue for political balance in the country.

 

He also touched on the growing speculation around Atiku Abubakar possibly running on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform. If that happens, Datti asked a sharp question: how would Peter Obi or Rotimi Amaechi respond? Both are major political players from the South, and their next moves could reshape the opposition landscape.

 

But what stood out most in his remarks was his clear rejection of any idea that Peter Obi should play second fiddle in the next election.

 

“Peter Obi shouldn’t be a VP,” Datti said plainly.

 

It’s a strong message—one that seems aimed not just at Obi, but at anyone thinking about a coalition that puts Southern candidates in supporting roles instead of at the top of the ticket. For Datti, Obi should be leading the charge, not backing someone else.
