As part of sustained efforts to combat crime and enhance security in Benue State, troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), under the Joint Task Force (JTF), have apprehended two individuals suspected of cattle rustling in Guma Local Government Area.

According to Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, Acting Media Information Officer for OPWS, the suspects were detained during a patrol mission to support police forces following a recent clash with armed herders near Udei Village.

The suspects, identified as 32-year-old Raymond Abina and 21-year-old Sunday Faga, both residents of Ukohol Village in Guma, were intercepted on a motorcycle carrying a sack filled with freshly slaughtered cow meat. When questioned, the duo claimed to have bought the meat from a Fulani herder deep in the forest. However, initial investigations suggest the meat came from a stolen cow previously reported missing from Tse Pokiau Village, near Daudu.

Both suspects are currently under investigation and will be transferred to the appropriate authorities for further legal action once inquiries are concluded.

Commenting on the incident, OPWS Commander Major General Moses Gara denounced the increasing occurrences of cattle theft, farmland destruction, and acts of jungle justice. He emphasized that such criminal behaviors contribute to insecurity and strained relations among communities.

“Cattle rustling and the destruction of people’s livelihoods pose serious challenges to peace and stability in Benue. Our mission remains clear—we will dismantle criminal networks and restore order,” Major General Gara stated.

He urged residents, particularly in rural areas, to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activity to security agencies. He stressed that achieving lasting peace requires collective responsibility and public cooperation.

The Commander also called on traditional leaders, faith-based groups, and youth organizations to advocate for dialogue, understanding, and peaceful coexistence. He reiterated that meaningful progress can only come through lawful resolution of conflicts and active community engagement.

General Gara reaffirmed OPWS’s commitment to neutralizing security threats within its jurisdiction and cautioned against taking the law into one’s hands, urging the public to place trust in the justice system and allow security personnel to carry out their duties effectively.

In conclusion, he appealed to the media to continue promoting unity, national cohesion, and civic responsibility, while supporting efforts aimed at maintaining law and order.
