Auchi Poly Students Demand Apology from Peter Obi Over False Death Claims, Threaten Protest

Auchi Poly Students Demand Apology from Peter Obi Over False Death Claims, Threaten Protest

The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has strongly criticized Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, for claiming that students at Auchi Polytechnic lost their lives during a recent campus incident. NAPS insists the claim is entirely false and politically motivated.

At a press conference held in Abuja on Monday, NAPS President Comrade Eshiofune Paul Oghayan stated unequivocally that no student fatalities occurred. He clarified that while a few students experienced minor teargas-related injuries, none required hospitalization, and no deaths were reported.

“Let the truth be known throughout Nigeria—no life was lost at Auchi Polytechnic. The claim is baseless,” Oghayan declared. He further challenged Obi and his supporters to provide concrete evidence—names, identities, or families—of any supposed victims, warning that failure to do so confirms the allegation as politically driven misinformation.

Oghayan accused Obi of hypocrisy, noting that the same public figure who often urges Nigerians to “verify” failed to follow his own advice. He described Obi’s actions as an irresponsible exploitation of student issues for political gain.

NAPS also condemned what it called Obi’s repeated use of inaccurate statistics and failure to correct misinformation, describing these tendencies as morally troubling.

The association has issued a stern demand: Obi must issue a formal apology to both Auchi Polytechnic and the Nigerian student body. This apology must be published on the front pages of at least four national newspapers within 72 hours.

Should he fail to comply, NAPS warned of a series of peaceful protests, including picketing at Obi’s known offices and a coordinated global media campaign aimed at combating high-level misinformation.

In addition, NAPS called for an investigation into the role of the institution’s Chief Security Officer during the recent Students’ Union Government (SUG) elections. They are also seeking an audit of the school’s security arrangements, disciplinary action against any negligent personnel, and justice for students affected dur

ing the unrest.
