2027: Atiku Dumps PDP Ahead of General Election
Former Vice President of Nigeria and presidential flagbearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has officially walked away from the party he helped to build.
Daily Watch Nigeria gathered that Atiku’s resignation didn’t come as a surprise to political observers, as there had been whispers in the political space about his involvement in forming a new coalition known as the Alliance Democratic Congress (ADC), likely in preparation for the 2027 polls.
His decision was sealed in a resignation letter dated Monday, July 14, 2025, which he addressed to the chairman of his local PDP ward—Jada 1, in Jada LGA of Adamawa State.
The letter, shared by his media aide via X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, was full of emotions. In it, Atiku expressed deep appreciation for all the support and opportunities he enjoyed while in the party.
“I’m writing to officially resign from the PDP with immediate effect,” he wrote. “I’ve had the honour of serving this country as Vice President for two terms, and I’ve also had the chance to contest for the presidency under this party. These remain unforgettable parts of my journey.”
He admitted that leaving wasn’t an easy decision, especially as one of the founding members of the party. However, he pointed to what he described as the PDP’s current direction, which he says no longer aligns with the values on which the party was built.
“It breaks my heart, but I believe it’s time to move on,” Atiku said. “There are clear differences now that can’t be resolved.”
He rounded off the letter by wishing the party and its leadership well.
With this latest move, it’s clear that Atiku is preparing to take another shot at the presidency under a new platform, setting the stage for what could be another defining moment in Nigeria’s political history.
