Decisions Made at the Labour Party NEC Meeting Held on July 21, 2025

Decisions Made at the Labour Party NEC Meeting Held on July 21, 2025

Abure’s Labour Party Faction Now Working For APC - Arambabi

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party convened its official meeting at the party’s National Secretariat in Utako, Abuja. Present at the meeting were members of the National Working Committee, party executives, Sen. Datti Baba-Ahmed (2023 Vice Presidential candidate), state chairpersons, key stakeholders, and other co-opted NEC members in accordance with Article 13 (A) of the Labour Party Constitution.

After extensive deliberations, the NEC adopted the following resolutions:

1. The NEC firmly denounced and dissociated itself from the unauthorized gathering held at Transcorp on Friday, July 18, 2025. It was noted that this meeting — organized without the party’s official mandate — unlawfully attempted to rebrand a previously discredited Caretaker Committee, established in Umuahia, as an Interim National Working Committee.

2. The Council emphasized that changing the name of an illegal structure does not legitimize it. An illegality, regardless of presentation, remains invalid.

3. The NEC highlighted that the said meeting directly violated both the party’s Constitution and Nigeria’s Electoral Act. Specifically, Article 14 (4)(B) of the Labour Party Constitution assigns authority to convene NEC meetings solely to the National Secretary with the Chairman’s approval. Furthermore, Section 82 (1)(2)(a) of the 2022 Electoral Act mandates that a 21-day notice be submitted to INEC for any political gathering aimed at leadership elections or nominations. Such notice must be jointly issued by the National Chairman and Secretary.

4. As such, the Labour Party’s NEC officially renounces any affiliation with the said meeting or its decisions.

5. The NEC reaffirmed that the party’s leadership remains fully intact and undisputed. A valid National Convention took place in Nnewi, Anambra State, on March 27, 2024, in accordance with all legal and constitutional guidelines. This convention — and the leadership it produced — was upheld by the Supreme Court in its ruling on April 4, 2025. In light of this, the NEC urges the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, to act in accordance with the Supreme Court’s decision and all other legal advisories before him.

6. NEC calls on all party members, supporters, and the public to disregard any announcements or decisions stemming from the unauthorized meeting.

7. Full confidence has been reaffirmed in the leadership of Barr. Julius Abure and the National Working Committee under his guidance. Members are encouraged to remain loyal and uphold the party’s directives.

8. NEC approved the scheduling of State, Local Government, and Ward Congresses as organized by the National Working Committee in alignment with party regulations and applicable laws.

9. On the matter of political alliances, the Labour Party clarified that it will not enter into any coalition ahead of the 2027 elections. The party considers the momentum from 2023 as a strong foundation and aims to build upon it through reconciliation, consolidation, and renewed grassroots mobilization. The party reaffirms its unique ideological identity and commitment to policies that address Nigeria’s pressing challenges, stating that it will not align with political actors who have previously mismanaged the nation’s resources.

10. The NEC applauded Sen. Datti Baba-Ahmed for his unwavering support and for expressing interest in contesting in the 2027 general election under the Labour Party.

Signed:

Barr. Julius Abure

National Chairman

Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim

National Secretary
