Why Atiku Has Yet to Officially Join the ADC

Despite stepping down from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) last week, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has not yet officially completed his registration with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), according to a close insider.
The source indicated that the delay is intentional, as Atiku prefers to finalize the process personally rather than delegating it to a proxy.
In a confidential conversation with Vanguard in Abuja, the insider attributed the postponement to Atiku’s recent travel schedule. “He returned to Nigeria for the funeral of the late President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura after coming back from an overseas business trip. Following the burial, he left again for a planned two-week holiday abroad,” the source revealed.
The insider emphasized that for a political figure of Atiku’s prominence, formal membership carries significant symbolic weight and must be done in person. “People expect to see His Excellency Alhaji Atiku Abubakar physically collecting his membership card and completing the official steps. Upon his return, this will be among his first priorities,” the source noted.
Understanding the political implications, Atiku appears keenly aware that this transition could influence alliances and public opinion ahead of the 2027 elections.
When asked about the timing of his registration, the source mentioned it would be strategically scheduled to maximize media coverage and political significance.
Although no specific date has been set, the source confirmed that Atiku’s formal enrollment in the ADC is imminent and will mark a significant turning point in Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
