Asisat Oshoala Quashes Retirement Rumors After WAFCON Triumph: “I’m Still Here”

Following Nigeria’s exhilarating 3-2 victory over Morocco in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final, speculation about Super Falcons star Asisat Oshoala retiring from international football has been firmly put to rest. Reports from Eyes of Lagos confirm the forward’s clear denial of these rumors.
Addressing the press in Morocco, the six-time African Women’s Player of the Year dismissed the retirement talk as completely unfounded.
“I honestly don’t know where that came from, but rumors will always fly. I’m focused on what matters — I’m still here, still playing, and still giving my best on the pitch,” Oshoala declared.
A Veteran Leader Behind Nigeria’s 12th WAFCON Title
At 30 years old, Oshoala was a crucial figure in Nigeria’s squad throughout the tournament, offering leadership and inspiration both on and off the field, even when coming off the bench. Her presence was instrumental in helping the Super Falcons secure their record 12th WAFCON championship, underscoring Nigeria’s continued supremacy in African women’s football.
A Storied Career of Milestones
Oshoala’s rise to prominence began in 2013, but it was the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup where she truly made her mark, taking home both the Golden Ball and Golden Boot awards. That same year, she played a key role in Nigeria’s African Women’s Championship victory.
She made history as the first African player to score in three successive FIFA Women’s World Cups and now boasts four WAFCON titles spanning 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2024.
Still a Key Figure in Nigerian Football
While her playing time has decreased in recent competitions, Oshoala remains a vital presence and one of African football’s most influential icons. Her recent statement offers reassurance to fans that she’s not stepping away anytime soon — her journey with the Super Falcons is far from over.
