AfroBasket 2025: D’Tigers Begin Strong with 77–59 Win Over Madagascar

Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, kicked off their 2025 FIBA AfroBasket campaign on a high note, securing a confident 77–59 victory against Madagascar in their Group B opener on Wednesday, August 13, in Angola.

Ten years after lifting their first AfroBasket trophy, D’Tigers signaled their intent to contend once again, recovering from a cautious start to take full control in the second half.

Cautious Opening, Confident Recovery

Nigeria rolled out a starting five of Caleb Agada, Ike Nwamu, Josh Okogie, Talib Zanna, and Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu. Despite a tentative first quarter, they edged ahead 18–14. However, Madagascar remained competitive, keeping the score close at halftime, with Nigeria holding a narrow 38–37 lead.

Caleb Agada was the standout performer early on, notching 13 points by the break to keep Nigeria slightly ahead of their determined opponents.

Momentum Shift in the Third Quarter

The tide turned decisively in the third quarter as Nigeria hit their stride. A sharp offensive push saw them outscore Madagascar 14–8 in the early minutes of the period. Agada continued to lead the charge, increasing his tally to 15 points, while Nigeria’s defense locked in.

Madagascar briefly rallied following a foul on Devine Eke that allowed Kiady Razanamahenina to convert three free throws, narrowing the gap. But D’Tigers quickly regained control and entered the final quarter up 55–46.

Leaders Deliver the Finish

In the fourth, Nigeria’s experienced core rose to the occasion. Agada wrapped up a stellar performance with a game-high 22 points. Stan Okoye added 13 points, and Ike Nwamu chipped in with 12, helping Nigeria dominate the final frame 22–13 to seal the 18-point win.

With this result, Nigeria starts Group B with a 1–0 record. They are set to face Tunisia next, followed by a clash against Cameroon in their final group match.
