Labour Party Urges Members to Ignore Peter Obi

Official Statement from the Labour Party – August 14, 2025

The Labour Party has responded to a recent statement by its former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, in which he urged supporters to vote for another party in the upcoming bye-elections scheduled for August 16, 2025.

The party leadership described Obi’s comments as misleading and advised all loyal members to disregard his directive, emphasizing that the Labour Party remains on the ballot and its candidates are duly contesting in the elections.

According to the statement signed by the National Chairman, Barr. Julius Abure, the party views Mr. Obi’s actions as a continuation of what it describes as his long-standing attempts to destabilize the party from within.

“It is regrettable that someone who rose to national prominence through the platform of the Labour Party is now actively working against it,” the statement reads. “Rather than support the party’s growth, Mr. Obi has chosen to align with interests that undermine the party’s unity and progress.”

The party also referenced past events, including an alleged unauthorized stakeholder meeting held in Umuahia in 2024, and claimed that Obi, alongside Governor Alex Otti, contributed to the internal crisis the party has faced.

Despite these challenges, the Labour Party reaffirmed that it has fulfilled all legal and procedural requirements to participate in the bye-elections. It urged members, supporters, and candidates to stay focused and vote for Labour Party candidates across all affected constituencies.

“We encourage our supporters to remain committed to the values of the Labour Party and to reject any attempt to divert their loyalty. The party is fully prepared for the bye-election and remains determined to defend its democratic mandate,” Abure concluded.
