Nnamdi Kanu’s Legal Team Bows Out of Ongoing Trial

Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), who has been leading the defence for the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has officially withdrawn from the ongoing terrorism case before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Kanu, who is currently facing a seven-count charge of terrorism filed by the Federal Government, appeared in court on Thursday when Agabi informed the presiding judge that he and his team would no longer be representing the defendant. According to him, Kanu had chosen to personally take over his legal defence.
Following Agabi’s announcement, other Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) on the defence team also notified the court of their withdrawal from the matter.
Confirming the development, Kanu told the court he would handle his defence for now, though he hinted that his decision could change later.
Justice James Omotosho, who is presiding over the case, asked Kanu whether he wanted the court to appoint a new counsel for him, but the IPOB leader declined the offer.
In a brief address to the court, Kanu also challenged the court’s jurisdiction to continue with his trial.
It will be recalled that Justice Omotosho had, on October 16, scheduled six consecutive hearing days—starting October 23—for Kanu to open and close his defence as part of the accelerated proceedings ordered in the case.
