Senators Raise Alarm: ‘Police Withdrawal From VIPs Puts Our Lives at Risk’

Nigerian senators have expressed deep concern over the recent decision to withdraw police protection from VIPs, warning that the move exposes them to serious security threats at a time when violent crimes are on the rise across the country.

The lawmakers, during a heated session at the National Assembly, argued that the withdrawal order—reportedly part of a broader security reform—fails to consider the realities of Nigeria’s current insecurity. Many senators described the measure as “ill-timed” and “dangerously insensitive,” stressing that public officials have increasingly become targets for kidnapping, assassination attempts, and politically motivated attacks.

Several senators recounted threats they have received in recent months, insisting that security aides are not a luxury but a necessity. According to them, the police hierarchy should have consulted widely before making such a sweeping decision affecting individuals who play critical roles in governance.

They emphasized that while reforms in policing are welcome, the approach must be strategic and gradual, not abrupt. Removing protection from high-profile officials without a clear alternative, they argued, could embolden criminal groups and further destabilize the political environment.

Some lawmakers urged the executive arm and the Inspector General of Police to immediately reconsider the directive. They proposed a more structured system that would ensure adequate protection for public officials while also freeing up officers for broader national security duties.

As debates continue, the Senate is expected to engage the police leadership for clarification and seek a solution that balances the nation’s security needs with the personal safety of government officials. The issue highlights long-standing concerns about Nigeria’s strained security architecture and the urgent need for comprehensive reform that safeguards both leaders and ordinary citizens alike.
