Elderly Cleric Killed While Calling Muslims to Prayer in Kano

A tragic incident occurred on Monday morning at Yusuf Garko Mosque in the Maraba Quarters area of Kano, where an elderly Islamic cleric, Ladan Zubairu, was brutally killed while performing the call to prayer.
According to information gathered, the cleric had gone out at dawn to announce the morning prayer. After completing the first call, he reportedly sat inside the mosque to recite supplications before the second call when a man suddenly entered the mosque armed with a weapon and attacked him, slitting his throat on the spot.
The deceased’s son, Isa Kasim, said the attacker was quickly pursued by residents of the area. An angry crowd later caught the suspect and killed him. During the chaos that followed, the assailant’s house was set on fire, causing panic in the neighbourhood before security operatives intervened.
Kasim further revealed that after the suspect was killed, residents discovered the victim’s severed throat wrapped in a nylon bag inside the attacker’s pocket, deepening the shock within the community.
Confirming the incident, the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said officers were swiftly deployed to the area to restore order and prevent further violence. He noted that calm has since returned to Maraba Quarters.
The police recovered the bodies of both the victim and the suspect and moved them to the Mohammed Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital for autopsy. Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has ordered a full investigation into the killing, assuring that anyone found responsible will be dealt with according to the law.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information as investigations continue.
