Fayose Criticise Makinde: Return N30B Bodija Explosion Fund With Interest

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has called on Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to return the N30 billion federal intervention fund meant for victims of the January 16, 2024, Bodija explosion in Ibadan, claiming Makinde admitted he never spent the money.

In a statement on Thursday through his spokesperson, Femi Philips, Fayose criticized the Oyo governor for failing to inform the public about the N30 billion received and the remaining N20 billion, only revealing details after mentioning the N50 billion federal intervention fund.

“Since Governor Makinde has confirmed keeping the N30 billion in a bank since 2024, the state government should return it to the Federal Government so it can reach the people it was intended for,” Fayose said. “The federal authorities have systems in place to support the victims, but the governor chose to play politics with their welfare.”

Fayose further highlighted that “N30 billion left idle for 18 months would have earned around N4.5 billion in interest at 10 percent. Therefore, Governor Makinde should return at least N34.5 billion to the federal coffers.”

Emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in public office, Fayose said he felt compelled to make the issue public. “If the governor had been fully transparent about his meeting with the President and the approved N50 billion intervention request, there would have been no need for this disclosure. Public office requires honesty, not selective reporting of facts for political gain,” he added.
