Ogun Police Arraign Driver in Anthony Joshua Accident Case, Trial Adjourned to January 20

The Ogun State Police Command has brought before the court the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the accident that injured British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua and led to the death of two persons.

The suspect, identified as Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, a 45-year-old male, was arraigned before a Magistrate Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the defendant was charged on four counts before Chief Magistrate O.M. Somefun of the Sagamu Magisterial District.

The charges include driving in a manner considered dangerous to the public, an act which allegedly resulted in a fatal crash that claimed two lives. The offence is said to be punishable under Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2002, as applicable in Ogun State.

Further counts against the defendant include reckless and negligent driving, operating a vehicle at excessive speed without due care for other road users, and causing injuries to Anthony Joshua. He was also accused of driving without a valid National Driver’s License, an offence contrary to Section 10(1) of the same Act.

Chief Magistrate Somefun granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦5 million with two sureties. The accused was remanded in custody pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions.

The court has adjourned the matter to January 20, 2026, for the commencement of trial.
