Terror in Oyo Forest as 12 Bandits Burst from Bushes, Gun Down Fire on Guards — Police
Fear swept through parts of Oyo State after armed bandits staged a brazen ambush on forest guards inside a forest reserve, security authorities have revealed. The attackers, numbering about 12, reportedly lay in wait before springing out of the dense vegetation and opening fire on the unsuspecting guards.
The Oyo State Police Command said the incident occurred while the forest guards were on routine patrol to monitor illegal activities and maintain security within the forest. Without warning, the gunmen emerged from multiple points in the bush and began firing indiscriminately, forcing the guards to scatter for safety.
A senior police officer familiar with the operation described the attack as well-planned, noting that the assailants appeared to have prior knowledge of the patrol route. “They struck suddenly and fired repeatedly, creating panic and confusion. The guards narrowly escaped a worse outcome,” the officer said.
Although no official confirmation has been given on casualties, the police said the guards were able to withdraw and alert security agencies. Tactical teams were quickly mobilised and dispatched to the area to secure the forest and track the attackers, who fled deeper into the bush.
The gunshots reportedly sent shockwaves through nearby communities, with residents expressing fear over the growing boldness of criminal elements operating from forested zones. Some locals called for increased security presence and sustained patrols to prevent the forests from being used as hideouts by armed groups.
The police assured residents that intensive search operations are ongoing, adding that intelligence-led efforts are being intensified to flush out the criminals. Members of the public were also urged to report any suspicious movements to security agencies.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to restoring safety across Oyo State, stressing that those behind the attack would be identified and prosecuted. Investigations into the incident are still underway.
