FCT Poll: PDP Candidate Steps Down For APC After Wike’s Intervention

FCT Poll: PDP Candidate Steps Down For APC After Wike’s Intervention

The Peoples Democratic Party candidate for the Bwari Area Council chairmanship election, Julius Adamu, has pulled out of the race and declared support for the All Progressives Congress flag bearer, Joshua Musa, a development that has stirred debate within political circles in the Federal Capital Territory.

Adamu made his decision public on Wednesday during a gathering in Bwari attended by supporters and prominent political figures, including the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. The event drew attention after a video circulated online showing the moment the PDP candidate announced his withdrawal and called on his followers to rally behind Musa.

Speaking at the occasion, Wike confirmed the arrangement, stating that it had been agreed Adamu would step aside in favour of the APC contender.

In his address, Adamu said his decision followed extensive consultations. He described Musa as a brother and noted that it would be unwise for them to remain in a contest that could divide their supporters. He then formally declared his support for the APC candidate and urged his backers to do the same.

The Bwari chairmanship race is part of the February 21, 2026 Area Council elections in the FCT, where voters across six councils — Abuja Municipal, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Abaji and Kwali — will elect chairmen and councillors. The Independent National Electoral Commission scheduled the polls after campaigns commenced in September 2025 and are set to conclude on February 19.

A total of 68 elective positions are at stake, including six chairmanship seats and 62 councillorship positions.

The Bwari contest had attracted strong interest, with both PDP and APC keen on securing control of the council. Recently, the Supreme Court upheld Musa as the legitimate APC candidate following a series of legal disputes that reached the appellate courts.

Wike’s presence at the event has further fueled conversations, given his influential role in FCT politics since becoming minister in 2023. Though still a member of the PDP, the former Rivers State governor has openly supported certain APC initiatives and candidates, a stance that has drawn criticism from some members of his party.

While his supporters argue that his actions reflect political pragmatism, critics insist they amount to anti-party conduct and alignment with the ruling party’s interests.
