Alleged Coup Plot: DIA Moves Detained Zaria Cleric To DSS

Alleged Coup Plot: DIA Moves Detained Zaria Cleric To DSS

The controversy surrounding an alleged coup plot took a new twist on Tuesday as the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) transferred a detained cleric from Zaria to the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) for further investigation.

Security sources disclosed that the cleric, whose name has not been officially released by authorities, was initially apprehended in Zaria, Kaduna State, following intelligence reports linking him to alleged subversive activities. The arrest reportedly followed weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering by operatives concerned about statements and meetings believed to have implications for national security.

The Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), Nigeria’s military intelligence arm, had taken the lead in the early stages of the investigation due to the alleged involvement of elements suspected to have military connections. However, in what officials describe as a “procedural handover,” the cleric has now been moved to the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), the country’s primary domestic intelligence agency, to deepen the probe.

Sources familiar with the development indicated that the transfer was part of an inter-agency collaboration aimed at ensuring a thorough and coordinated investigation. The DSS is expected to examine digital communications, financial transactions, and alleged contacts with individuals both within and outside the country.

While details of the alleged coup plot remain sketchy, security officials maintain that the government will not tolerate any attempt to undermine constitutional order. A senior official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the authorities are treating the matter with “utmost seriousness” but cautioned against speculation until investigations are concluded.

Community leaders in Zaria have reacted with mixed feelings. Some expressed shock at the allegations, describing the cleric as outspoken but not violent. Others urged security agencies to ensure transparency and uphold the suspect’s rights throughout the process.

Legal analysts note that allegations bordering on treason or conspiracy to overthrow a democratically elected government are among the gravest offences under Nigerian law. If formal charges are filed and proven in court, the penalties could be severe.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the DIA nor the DSS had issued a detailed public statement outlining the exact nature of the accusations. Observers say the coming days will likely reveal more about the scope of the alleged plot and the possible involvement of other suspects.

For now, the development underscores the heightened vigilance of Nigeria’s security apparatus amid ongoing concerns about stability and national cohesion.
