Zulum Commits N12.9bn Scholarship to Train Borno Youths

In a bold move to empower the younger generation, the Governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum, has unveiled a N12.9 billion scholarship program aimed at providing quality education and vocational training for youths across the state. The initiative, announced during a press briefing at the Government House in Maiduguri, is designed to equip the youth with the skills needed to compete in Nigeria’s rapidly evolving economy.

Governor Zulum described the scholarship as “a strategic investment in the future of Borno State,” emphasizing that education and skill acquisition are critical tools in combating unemployment and fostering social development. “Our youths are our greatest asset. This program will ensure they are equipped not just academically but also with practical skills that will make them self-reliant and competitive globally,” he stated.

The scholarship fund of N12.9 billion will cover tuition fees, learning materials, and stipends for selected students pursuing both local and international educational programs. It will also support vocational and technical training for youths who wish to acquire marketable skills in sectors such as information technology, engineering, agriculture, and entrepreneurship.

Officials from the Borno State Ministry of Education revealed that the program would prioritize underprivileged youths and internally displaced persons (IDPs), ensuring that those most affected by past insurgencies in the region benefit from this opportunity. “We want to create an inclusive educational platform where no youth is left behind,” noted the Commissioner for Education.

Education experts have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a game-changer for a state long challenged by economic setbacks and insecurity. Analysts believe that providing structured scholarships and skills training can significantly reduce youth unemployment and curb the lure of negative influences that have affected some communities in Borno.

The governor also hinted at partnerships with universities and technical institutes both within Nigeria and abroad, signaling the state’s ambition to offer world-class training and exposure to its youths. Selection for the scholarship program is expected to begin in the coming months, with a transparent application and screening process to ensure fairness and inclusivity.

As Borno State continues its journey of recovery and development, Governor Zulum’s N12.9 billion scholarship initiative is poised to become a defining program in creating opportunities, nurturing talent, and building a generation of skilled, self-reliant youths ready to contribute to the state and the

nation.
