2027 Polls Will Be Nigeria’s Most Credible Yet – Amupitan

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, has pledged that Nigeria’s 2027 general election will set a new standard for credibility and transparency, assuring citizens that lessons from previous polls are guiding preparations.

Speaking on Sunday at the Citizens’ Townhall on the 2026 Electoral Act in Abuja, Amupitan expressed optimism that the commission’s ongoing reforms would deliver a smoother and more dependable electoral process nationwide.

He said Nigerians are becoming increasingly aware of the link between credible elections and national progress, adding that the commission is committed to strengthening public confidence in the democratic system.

Amupitan noted that INEC is working to prevent a repeat of the technical challenges experienced during the 2023 presidential election, particularly regarding electronic transmission of results. He explained that improved result management systems and better logistical coordination are central to the commission’s strategy to enhance transparency.

According to him, safeguards built into the law that permit alternative methods of result collation are precautionary measures rather than indications of expected failure. He stressed that INEC remains determined to ensure that electronic transmission functions effectively without disruption.

Reflecting on the deployment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), Amupitan acknowledged that while it had been used in smaller elections before 2023, the scale of the presidential poll revealed areas needing improvement. To address this, the commission plans to conduct a nationwide mock presidential exercise ahead of the 2027 elections to test the system’s capacity under full operational pressure.

He also emphasized that logistical planning and infrastructure, including network availability, are crucial factors in the success of elections, often posing greater challenges than the technology itself.

Amupitan concluded by reaffirming INEC’s commitment to delivering what he described as a near-flawless election in 2027.
