UEFA Slaps Real Madrid With €15,000 Fine Over Fan’s Nazi Salute

UEFA has imposed a €15,000 ($17,000) fine on Real Madrid after a supporter was seen performing a Nazi salute before their Champions League match against Benfica last week.

In addition to the monetary penalty, the European football governing body issued a partial stadium closure affecting 500 seats, which has been suspended for a one-year probationary period. UEFA cited the punishment as a response to the “racist and or discriminatory behavior of its supporters” during the second leg of the play-off round on February 25.

The club promptly ejected the fan caught on camera before kickoff, taking immediate action against the misconduct.

The tie’s first leg had already been overshadowed by a reported incident of alleged racial abuse directed at Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni, who denies the allegations.

Madrid advanced to the Champions League last 16, where they are set to face Premier League side Manchester City.
