INEC Sets the Bar High, Prof. Amupitan Calls for Integrity and Professionalism Ahead of 2027 Elections

Uyo, Akwa Ibom State ,The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is already laying the groundwork for the 2027 general elections, with Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan urging staff to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, transparency, and integrity.

Addressing personnel from three HR commissions in Uyo, Prof. Amupitan stressed that credible elections start with the commitment of staff today. “Nigerians expect free, fair, and credible elections. Every staff member has a responsibility to meet that expectation,” he said.

The Chairman highlighted the Commission’s ongoing preparations, including internal reviews, technical engagements, and operational improvements, aimed at strengthening the electoral process. He described the current efforts as shaping the blueprint for a transparent and credible 2027 election: “If you want to predict the future, you create it.”

Central to these preparations is the integrity of the voter register, reinforced through the ongoing Voter Revalidation Exercise, which eliminates duplicate registrations and removes deceased voters. Prof. Amupitan also stressed deeper collaboration with national data bodies, including the National Population Commission and the National Identity Management Commission, to ensure that only eligible citizens are captured in the register.

On staff development, the INEC Chairman reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to improving personnel welfare and establishing a specialized professional cadre to recognize the technical and high-stakes nature of electoral management.

He further urged staff to ensure that electoral technologies, particularly the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, are fully functional and deployment-ready for upcoming elections.

Resident Electoral Commissioner Obo Effanga described the Chairman’s visit as a vital opportunity for direct engagement with staff, reinforcing INEC’s drive toward efficiency, transparency, and public confidence in Nigeria’s democracy.
