Truck Kills Toddler, Two Others in Tragic Crash on Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway
A tragic road accident has claimed the lives of a toddler and two other individuals along the busy Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway, throwing commuters and residents into mourning.
The fatal incident occurred when a truck reportedly lost control and rammed into pedestrians along the highway. Eyewitnesses said the heavy-duty vehicle was moving at considerable speed before the driver suddenly lost control, leading to the devastating collision that killed three people instantly, including the young child.
According to witnesses at the scene, the victims were by the roadside when the truck veered off its lane. The impact caused panic among passersby and motorists, many of whom rushed to assist the victims. Unfortunately, the toddler and two adults were pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of their injuries.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps later arrived at the scene to manage traffic and begin preliminary investigations into the cause of the crash. The bodies of the deceased were subsequently evacuated and taken to a nearby morgue.
Authorities stated that the accident may have been caused by reckless driving or possible mechanical failure, though a full investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Federal Road Safety Corps used the opportunity to remind motorists, especially drivers of heavy trucks, to adhere strictly to traffic regulations and maintain safe speeds, particularly on major highways where pedestrian movement is common.
The Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway is one of the busiest routes connecting Lagos and Abeokuta. The road has witnessed several accidents over the years, often linked to speeding, poor vehicle maintenance, and disregard for traffic rules.
Residents and commuters have repeatedly called on relevant authorities to intensify road safety enforcement and introduce more protective measures to prevent further loss of lives on the highway.
The latest tragedy has once again highlighted growing concerns about road safety and the urgent need for stricter compliance with traffic laws to safeguard both motorists and pedestrians.
