Igboho Endorses Tinubu’s Second Term, Rejects Obi and Atiku as Yoruba Group Distances Itself

Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo has openly declared support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu to secure a second term in office, stating that the South-West region should remain loyal to the Nigerian leader.

In a video reported by SaharaReporters, Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho, said he and his supporters would not accept political campaigns by Peter Obi or Atiku Abubakar in the South-West.

“President Tinubu for a second term. We don’t want any Peter Obi or Atiku Abubakar here,” Igboho said in the widely circulated clip.

The activist also suggested that supporters could continue to urge Tinubu to remain in office even after completing the constitutionally allowed two terms. “Even after Bola Tinubu completes his eight years in office, we will still beg him to continue,” he said.

Igboho further warned against bringing political discussions involving Obi or Atiku into the South-West, asserting that the region remains politically aligned with the president.

However, the remarks have drawn criticism from sections of the Yoruba self-determination movement. The Yoruba Union has distanced itself from Igboho’s statements and rejected what it described as his endorsement of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and its administration.

In a statement signed by its convener Olusola Badero and released by the organisation’s Home Director Princess Balogun, the group said it had received numerous inquiries from Yoruba people both within Nigeria and abroad seeking clarification about whether the union supported Igboho’s political stance.

The group stated that it was not aligned with the activist’s position and insisted that the struggle for the liberation and sovereignty of the Yoruba people should not be sacrificed for political interests.

“We unequivocally distance ourselves from Sunday Igboho’s selfish act of abandoning Yoruba Nation agitation to come out publicly to campaign for APC and its agent,” the union said, arguing that government policies had pushed many Nigerians into economic hardship while insecurity continues to escalate.

The organisation added that the agitation for Yoruba self-determination has historically been built on sacrifice and commitment, noting that many individuals involved in the movement have faced severe consequences, including death and kidnapping.

Nigerian media outlets including Daily Trust and The Punch have reported growing divisions among groups advocating for Yoruba self-determination, particularly regarding political alliances with mainstream parties.

Igboho gained prominence during campaigns advocating for the creation of an independent Yoruba Nation. His latest remarks, however, have sparked debate within the movement over whether political endorsements align with the original goals of the agitation.
