SON Backs Nigeria’s National Single Window Platform to Simplify Import, Export Processes

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has reiterated its support for the Federal Government’s National Single Window for Trade, a digital system designed to simplify import and export procedures and improve efficiency across the country’s trade ecosystem.

The National Single Window platform, which is scheduled for launch on March 27, 2026, will provide a centralised electronic portal where importers, exporters, and other stakeholders can submit trade-related documentation. The system is expected to integrate multiple government agencies involved in trade regulation, reducing duplication and accelerating cargo clearance processes.

Speaking on the development, the Director-General of SON, Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, said the organisation is fully aligned with the initiative and is already taking steps to integrate its regulatory procedures into the digital platform.

According to him, the move will help ensure that products entering or leaving Nigeria comply with national and international quality standards while making the process easier for businesses.

“This initiative marks a significant step toward modernising Nigeria’s trade infrastructure. Through the electronic submission of permits, certificates, and other regulatory documents, traders will experience faster processing and improved transparency,” Okeke said.

He explained that as the nation’s regulatory authority responsible for product quality assurance, consumer protection, and fair-trade enforcement, SON is collaborating with other government agencies to ensure that standards compliance procedures are fully incorporated into the National Single Window framework.

Okeke added that the organisation has already aligned some of its digital platforms with the new system to ensure seamless integration once the platform becomes operational.

“Our preparations will allow faster processing of standards-related approvals and better coordination with partner agencies within the National Single Window environment,” he said.

According to reports by Nigerian media outlets such as The Punch and Leadership Newspaper, the National Single Window initiative is part of broader government reforms aimed at digitising trade processes, improving transparency, and enhancing Nigeria’s competitiveness in global commerce.

Industry observers note that by consolidating documentation and regulatory processes into a single digital interface, the platform could significantly reduce delays at Nigerian ports, improve compliance monitoring, and create a more business-friendly environment for international trade.

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria said it will continue to play a key role in safeguarding product standards and consumer safety while supporting the Federal Government’s broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s position in global trade.
