IGP Disu Issues Stern Warning to Newly Promoted AIGs and CPs on Corruption, Misconduct

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Tunji Disu, has cautioned newly promoted senior officers against corruption, abuse of office, and indiscipline, emphasizing that misconduct would not be tolerated under his watch. The warning came during the decoration ceremony for officers elevated to Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs) at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Monday.

Disu stressed that the promotions were not mere rewards but carried significant responsibility, placing the officers under heightened scrutiny and demanding exemplary leadership and ethical conduct. “From this moment, you are no longer just senior officers; you are strategic leaders of this institution. Your actions, decisions, and personal conduct must reflect discipline, integrity, and absolute respect for the rule of law,” he said, according to a statement shared with The PUNCH.

The IGP highlighted that senior officers would be held accountable not only for operational outcomes but also for the behaviour of personnel under their commands. He warned that lax supervision often breeds misconduct, while strong leadership enforces standards. “There will be zero tolerance for indiscipline, abuse of office, corruption, or dereliction of duty under your command. You must take full responsibility for the conduct of your personnel,” Disu added.

Disu also urged officers to embrace people-oriented policing, prioritizing professionalism, respect for human rights, and responsiveness to the public. He encouraged the adoption of modern policing practices and innovation while eliminating outdated procedures to enhance operational efficiency, accountability, and public trust.

In a related development, the IGP announced that the newly promoted Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) and AIGs would participate in a strategic leadership retreat beginning March 24, 2026. Organised by the Police Reform Secretariat in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the retreat aims to strengthen transformational leadership, professionalism, and modern policing standards across commands.

The PUNCH reports that earlier this month, seven AIGs were promoted to DIGs, succeeding officers who served under the immediate past IGP, Kayode Egbetokun. Analysts note that Disu’s directive reflects a broader push by the Force to institutionalize accountability and ethical leadership within Nigeria’s police hierarchy.
