ADC Alleges APC Government Undermining Opposition Ahead of 2027 Elections

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of systematically weakening opposition parties to pave the way for President Bola Tinubu’s continued hold on power in the 2027 general elections.

Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, made the claims during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday. He argued that the political landscape is being manipulated to prevent meaningful competition.

“During the military regime of Sani Abacha, five political parties were created to ensure he remained the sole presidential candidate,” Abdullahi said. “Today, we are witnessing a similar strategy where the APC government is actively undermining other parties to secure President Tinubu as the unchallenged candidate in 2027.”

The ADC spokesperson stressed the party’s commitment to defending democratic principles and ensuring a level playing field. “We have a duty to protect democracy in Nigeria. We will pursue every legal avenue to ensure citizens’ rights are upheld. Nigerians are not a conquered people and cannot be politically enslaved,” Abdullahi added.

The comments come amid ongoing disputes within several opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and smaller regional parties, which observers say have struggled with internal crises and leadership challenges. According to The Guardian Nigeria, opposition fragmentation remains a key hurdle to mounting a credible challenge to the APC.

Political analysts have warned that the consolidation of power by ruling parties, if left unchecked, could further erode trust in Nigeria’s democratic institutions. Social media commentary, including reactions on Twitter and Facebook, has highlighted widespread concern among citizens over the state of political competition in the country.

As the 2027 election cycle approaches, the ADC says it will continue advocating for transparency, internal democracy, and the protection of opposition rights to ensure that the political process remains open and competitive.
