Over 8,000 Delegates Set for APC Convention as Party Stands Firm on Zoning Formula

The All Progressives Congress (APC) says it is fully set for its National Convention this weekend, with no fewer than 8,453 delegates expected in Abuja to elect a new National Working Committee (NWC).

Party leaders gave the update on Thursday during a media briefing in the Federal Capital Territory, outlining logistics, security arrangements, and the framework guiding the exercise.

Chairman of the Convention’s Central Coordination Committee, Aminu Bello Masari, used the opportunity to defend the party’s zoning arrangement, describing it as essential to maintaining internal balance. According to him, allocating positions across geopolitical zones is in line with the principle of federal character and long-standing party tradition.

As reported by TheCable, Masari cautioned against attempts by aspirants to contest positions outside their designated zones, warning that such moves could destabilise the process. He suggested that those disregarding the zoning structure may not have the party’s best interests at heart.

The former Katsina State governor also downplayed concerns about possible legal disputes շուրջ the arrangement. He noted that the party had not received any court papers challenging the zoning formula but would respond appropriately if that changed.

On his part, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, confirmed the number of accredited delegates, explaining that participants would be drawn from across the 36 states and the FCT. Idris also addressed concerns about funding, stating that the APC had adopted what he described as a flexible budgeting system for the event. According to him, the approach allows the party to adjust spending based on available resources without incurring debt.

He assured that all financial obligations tied to the convention would be met, dismissing speculation about funding gaps.

Security for delegates travelling to Abuja was another key issue raised at the briefing. The minister expressed confidence in ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to ensure safe movement across the country, noting that there had been no reported incidents involving members of the planning committee so far.

With final preparations in place, attention now shifts to the outcome of the convention and how the party navigates competing interests within its ranks while maintaining unity.
